In Memoriam of Professor Mohd Zakaria Siddiqui Former Dean Faculty of Law Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh

Prof. Mohammad Zakaria Siddiqui (1937-2023) an esteemed academic and authority on Indian criminal law and criminal sentencing had an illustrious career spanning several decades.

Originally from Barabanki, U.P., he studied at Lucknow University before pursuing postgraduate studies in Law at Aligarh Muslim University. In 1961, he joined the Law Faculty at AMU, where he remained until his retirement in 1997, ultimately serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Law Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh. He also served as Full Professor at universities in Kashmir, Kenya, Nigeria, and Malaysia. After retiring from Aligarh, he conducted criminal procedure research at Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University in Lucknow.

Many of his students achieved positions as advocates in the Supreme Court of India, justices in various state High Courts, Vice Chancellors of universities, and academics across India and the Commonwealth. For the past few years, Prof. Siddiqi resided with his family in California. He is survived by his wife, Rashida Siddiqui, who is a retired professor of Sociology from AMU, as well as his daughter, Saba Zakaria Ahmad, and son, Faisal Zakaria Siddiqi.
