Abstract:

Jihad is a term that is related to Islam. Since the division of India, Hindus have been in majority and Muslims have been a minority group. Muslim population in India is something around 25 crores.  Islam emerged in Arabia in the 7th century and within several years it grew rapidly in many countries.  Jihad is a very complex term but if we try to understand it, in simple words it means fighting injustice and abuse that is done towards Islam, spreading positivity towards Islam, and creating a peaceful society through teaching and preaching or holy war. People might also interpret jihad as the inner struggle to do the right thing but this is not what jihad is. The former explanation well defines jihad.

Jihad is divided into 2 categories that are “greater Jihad” and “lesser Jihad”. Greater Jihad relates to the struggle with the wrong which lies within. On the other hand, lesser jihad means to fight against an enemy. If greater jihad is followed these fights and wars might come to an end.

Jihad has its origin from Muhamad and Quran. Quran never used the word jihad for fighting in the name of Allah. As time passed by enemies against them started increasing and they had to stand up for themselves to protect their rights. Jihad aims to spread peace and harmony in society, the be pure from the inside, to spread humanity. According to the Islam religion if there is war there should be no unnecessary destruction, shelter is to be provided to those in need, no torture to prisoners. When the war is over religion says to keep aside our egos and help those in need, also the land and wealth should not be exploited.
